Cause and Effect Essay

15 November 2013                     Radiation; the Never Ending Effects

Radiation used on childhood cancer should be stopped. This type of treatment can cause many problems in the future for the child. [TE1] It even causes problems while going through the treatment as a child. There are many types of radiation; CT scans, MRIs, and Radiology. [TE2] [TE3] There was a girl named Sophie who went through radiation treatment. There was cancer in her body which is called Brain Cancer. While she went through the machine, she wondered if the laser was actually doing her any good, but she knew that it was burning or killing her skin cells [TE4] like fire set loose on paper. She also has to wear a protective cover-up that look like some type of alien mask.[TE5]  The effects from radiation can be serious especially in the future for an adult who had cancer in their childhood; the effects are significantly low IQ scores, it damages skin cells, and causes cancer or increases the chance of getting cancer again.[TE6] [TE7]

It’s important to realize that radiation can lower IQ scores over time [TE8] even as the patient or child gets older. In the article, “Late Effects of Childhood Cancer Treatment,” The National Cancer Institute explains that[TE9] , Survival rates have increased over recent decades for children with brain tumors; however, long-term [TE10] cognitive effects due to their illness and associated treatments are emerging.”[TE11]    In making this comment, The National Cancer Institute informs [TE12] us about survival rates are increased with radiation, but there are many long term effects after treatment like decreasing IQ scores. Radiation is bad just like this effect is. They both can be harmful and radiation gives the child a low IQ. In the same way, The National Cancer Institute observes that, [TE13] “The negative impact of radiation treatment has been characterized by changes in intelligence quotient (IQ) scores, which have been noted to drop about 2 to 5 years after diagnosis with an attenuation of the decline 5 to 10 years afterward, followed by stabilization of the IQ scores 20 to 40 years after diagnosis.” [TE14] The National Cancer Institute’s point is that [TE15] the IQ scores drop over the years after their treatment for children who’s been diagnosed with Brain Cancer. Both the cause and the effect are closely related by showing how the IQ score drop over the years from the radiation treatment.

Next, Nicky Phillips claims that, [TE16] Given the high number of patients who need the treatment, a team of Melbourne clinicians and scientists at the Australian Synchrotron are developing an experimental radiation therapy that better targets cancer cells while reducing the damage to healthy surrounding tissue.”[TE17]  Basically, Nicky Phillips is saying that [TE18] many people, who are receiving radiation therapy or treatment, are gaining damage to their healthy tissue surrounding the Tumor. Also the doctors are trying to make better radiation technology. Both the cause and effect relate back to each other because when radiation treatment is used on the tumor it affects the healthy tissue around it which is the effects from the radiation. In the same manner, Nicky observes that[TE19] , “A scientist involved in the project, Peter Rogers, said while conventional radiation therapy was effective at killing tumor cells, some normal tissue was also damaged as X-rays entered and exited the body.”[TE20]  In other words, Nicky believes [TE21] the scientist that was involved in the project in making new radiation treatments and how it is used and he also knows about how the normal tissue is damaged. Both the cause and the effect are closely related as how Radiation causes skin damage to the healthy tissue around the tumor.

Another effect from radiation is that it causes cancer or increases the chance of getting cancer again. Stephanie Innes states that[TE22] , The change is an effort to minimize the amount of radiation children get, since recent studies have raised concerns that the large doses of radiation in computed tomography (CT) scans may pose a cancer risk." [TE23] Stephanie’s point is that [TE24] there should be a better way to treat children with radiation and it may cause cancer again for the child. Both the cause and the effect relate to each other closely by how radiation can increase the chance of getting cancer again and may happen in a different area or the same area as before.

If the doctors create a new type of treatment, then the survival rates as well as reducing the effects from the treatment will be better. Many children will be happy after their treatment and the fact that they will not have later effects that are quite negative in their future life. [TE25] This is a big problem and what’s the point of increasing the survival rates, but having many negative effects to all of the survivors. Wouldn’t it be nice, if the children talk about their stories about how their treatment helped them like a kid getting an awesome birthday present for their birthday, instead of having later effects to the survivors. The Survivor rates should be kept high, but also the later effects are unacceptable. This issue should be changed for all children around the world.

Cancer treatment; the Affects on Children

My brother Kasey Kliebenstein had Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He was diagnosed a day before his 4th birthday. It was very saddening and the treatment he had to go through was just unbearable pain. I always thought about if the chemo he had, which is a type of treatment through the veins, if it changed the way he thinks. This cancer is different though to the one I’m going to talk about. He’s been cancer free for about 4 years now and still is today. His deals with the blood but the one I’m going to talk about is Lymphoblastic Leukemia and it’s in the brain. This is one that works better for my thesis or question, because the Non Hodgkin’s is in the blood not the brain but it still can have affects in other places. Should CNS Radiation be used to treat Lymphoblastic Leukemia?

Many children age 4-17 are diagnosed with Lymphoblastic Leukemia and to treat it is with CNS Radiation. You may have heard of this treatment if someone you know has cancer or your parents have it. This is one of the most used cancer treatment just like chemo. Chemo is the most common though; it’s a poison that kills a lot of cells in your body, even your good cells but radiation does the same thing, except it has a later effect in your body many years later. Over the years it reduces a child’s IQ scores significantly as time progresses. This affects children’s long term education. It can make you feel like you are inferior to your peers and your not like any one else. This can also lead to depression and may lead to suicide in middle school or high school. It also affects the way they act and speaking skills. This affects the main part of a child’s life.

St. Jude hospital which is a very popular cancer hospital for children, said, “The children below the age of 4 had a significant decline in their abilitations.” CNS radiation type of treatment was introduced in the 1960s and 1970s. It has cured more people than before this time. The people that were cured are still being affected from that treatment today. They might have been different psychologically if they had a different type of treatment. St. Jude also said, “Children younger than 5 years old were more likely to have an IQ lower than 80 with 3 years of treatment than that of children that were over age 5 at their diagnoses. Younger children are more prone to treatment-related neurologic toxic effects.” In all survivors of cranial radiation; some have abnormalities are mild in some patients (their IQ drops about 10 points). There are those who have higher doses and may have significant learning disabilities. Children below the age of 4 and had cranial radiation treatment, may develop PTSD which is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD can have an affect on the family socialization, decreased social support, and noncancer stressors.

I asked my brother about how he felt about his self after taking chemo, and he said he never felt a difference about himself. Now for the children who had radiation as their treatment, they noticed some things about their test scores and even in high school after many years after their treatment with their cancer with radiation. Luke is a kid on the website called, “st.baldricks.”  He went under radiation treatment for 6 weeks and also chemo. He lives in Lansing in Minnesota and loves star wars, also arts and crafts. He was diagnosed with cancer when he was 3. He’s now 7 and is cancer free at the moment. His treatments has caused him to have 9 cavities in his 9 baby teeth and having a hard time gaining and maintaining his weight. As you see he has had a few effects from his treatment.

There are still a lot of unknown effects on the type of treatments that are used today to treat these types of cancers. These types of treatments that are being used can sometimes cure these types of cancer however the long term effects will continue to affect children psychologically and neurologically until more research can be performed. There are still many treatment centers located around the world that are diligently working to find healthier treatments that won’t have the long term side effects that we see and have seen in cancer treatment thus far. My opinion concerning this issue is it should not be used in children until all the side effects are known. Many children should never go through something this tragic and painful. They should use chemo as a alternative than radiation until they find something better for a child’s treatment.

Letter to the Editor,

The Sun News,

 P.O. Box 406,

 Myrtle Beach, SC 29578

Dear Editor-in-Chief:

My name is Tanner Elkins; I am a sophomore at Early College High School in Myrtle Beach.

I am writing this letter to address the effects of Radiation.

Radiation is used to treat cancer for all types of people. When this treatment is used on children, they can have negative effects after treatment on a child’s brain. In school for example, their IQ can significantly drop from their first four treatments. They should find an alternative for children’s treatments that will only kill the cancer cells and not have negative later effects like on the brain.

Many doctors who use this may think its fine to use and it helped many children to become cancer free. St. Jude even noticed that when they use radiation on children, it caused their IQ to become really low. This may cause problems with their self-a stem especially when they see that their grades are lower compared to their classmates. This may lead to suicide because they feel they don’t fit in.

Thank you so much for your time, I appreciate your help and hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

Tanner Elkins

Narritive Poem

The Catastrophic Beam

The boy is waiting for the laser to hit them;

Hoping its killing only cancer cells.

But he knows its killing others too especially his DNA.

He knows this because their skin looks like they got really bad sunburn.

He goes home asking his parents if the laser is bad or good.

Always wondering why he is the only one in the class that fails like a “cool kid” in school.

Many years after treatment, the man can’t think positive any more;

Hates his self for having Lower IQ scores,

Thinking he made his self this way.

Everybody makes fun of him, because of the way he speaks as like they are new to English at work.

He can’t budget his own check book and gets very frustrated getting ready to pop.

No one cares about him and he later grabs a gun with a loud BANG and writes a letter to everybody he knew why he killed him self.

When his girlfriend finds him after work in the living room slumped on the couch like he was made of Jell-O,

And FREAKS out and dials 9-1-1.

She knows it was too LATE and says good bye and hopes he is in a better place.

He sees the Light and wonders were is he.

Then a voice around him, talks with a DEEP voice.

It is GOD speaking to him and telling him to get back up,

It’s not his time and everyone is depending on him.

Suddenly he wakes up in the hospital and notices his head is wrapped up like a baby is when it is first born.

He then later promises not to commit suicide and is sworn to KEEP his head up.

Later to this day, he’s not the best person, but thinks GOD for giving him another chance.

On his wedding day he then starts to DANCE.

His voice has changed to monotone,

Just like a robot because of his HIGH toned cancer treatment,
